Through the decades, Bogdan Newman Caranci Inc. has made a growing impact on cityscapes and landscapes across Canada and abroad. The firm has also made contributions to architectural education and design excellence. Founded by Joseph Bogdan in 1969, the studio has continually been recognized for its design excellence, receiving awards and new work locally and in international markets. Moving forward, the studio continues to build on its established experience and strong reputation within the industry.

  • 1969: Joseph Bogdan Associates founded by Joseph Bogdan following internships at:
    • Prack and Prack Architects, Hamilton : Design for the Physical Education Complex, McMaster University wins the Hamilton Chapter – Award of Excellence. It also wins the Honourable Mention in the Massey Medal Competition.
    • John B. Parkin Architects, Toronto: Design for St.John’s City Hall wins the Canadian Architect – Award of Excellence.
bluffs
  • 1970: Bluffers Park – Waterfront Recreation Area, Scarborough Bluffs, wins the City of Scarborough Urban Design Award.
  • 1972: The firm completes the reconstruction of the historical Old Fort William Provincial Park, initiating the firm’s heritage practice.
  • 1973: The design for the Flemingdon Worship Centre establishes the start of an ongoing relationship with the Archdiocese of Toronto.
  • 1974: The design for the Pockwock Water System Headworks in Halifax, in partnership with John Preston and Associates, wins the Canadian Architect Magazine – Award of Excellence.
  • 1974: The first Coptic church, the St Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Church, is built in North America.
  • 1975: The Department of National Defence Ship Repair Unit in Halifax, Nova Scotia wins the Canadian Architect Yearbook’s Award for Excellence.
  • 1976: Angelo Caranci joins the firm.

  • 1977: The firm’s association with the multi-phased College Park Redevelopment begins.
  • 1977: The firm completes the reconstruction of the historical Old Fort William Provincial Park, intitating the firm’s heritage practice.

  • 1980: The firm prepares a master plan and urban design vision including the architectural design of a six-block Heritage District in downtown Tampa, Florida for the Old Hyde Park Village Centre.
  • 1983: The Ship Repair Facility for the Department of National Defense is designed and built in Esquimalt, British Columbia
  • 1985: The Onondaga County Central Library and Galleries of Syracuse project brings mixed-use development to the heart of Syracuse, New York including department stores, a library, office space and the Hotel Syracuse.

  • 1987: Elie Newman joins the firm.
  • 1988: A master plan for the 4.25 ha Richmond Hill Civic Centre is prepared, including a mixed-use development and public administrative offices.
  • 1989: Restorations begin on the nationally listed and historically designated Long Room in the Dominion Public Building.
  • 1989: The Liberties residential building of the College Park Redevelopment is given Honourable Mention by the Urban Development Institute.
  • 1989: Renovations to the original 1915 Carnegie-Grant Library and construction of an addition to the High Park Library begin and later win the Toronto Historical Board Certificate of Merit.
  • Joseph Bogdan serves as a lecturer of Urban Design at York University through the 80’s and into the 90’s.
  • 1990: The master plan of a 1215 ha site for the Community of Queensville, located north of Toronto is developed. The plan includes 10,000 residential units, a new town centre, 200 ha of industrial and business space, a 30 hectare university grounds and 275 hectares of open space.
shanghai
  • 1991: The firm wins an international design competition to design the 50-storey Shanghai International Ocean Shipping Centre. The project wins the City of Shanghai Millennium Award.
  • 1992: An Urban Design Study for Aurora was conducted for a 245 hectare site with woodlots and valleylands using a mixed-use village precinct concept.
  • 1993: The firm wins an international design competition in partnership with Richard Eastwick Architect to design the Yousuf Habib Al-Yousuf Tower.
  • 1994: The Orion Gate retail development wins the International Council of Shopping Centre’s Award for Innovative Design and New Construction.
  • 1995: Consolidation of 23 branch offices into the Roman Catholic Toronto Archdiocese Pastoral Centre as a new administrative centre is built.
  • 1995: A concept for an 11.5 hectare mixed-use waterfront Oilfields Supply Centre site in Dubai is designed on winning an international design competition.

  • 1996: The Don Mills Library Renovations wins the North York Design Award.
  • 1996: A plan and spatial concept is designed for a 65 hectare site in central Vienna adjacent to the Prater fairgrounds and park as a part of the Urban Design Study for Prater Centre for Magna International Inc.
  • 1997: A master plan for a 308 hectare site near Prague’s city centre is prepared for a resort and research complex using village-like precincts as a part of the Magna International Project
  • 1997: Kennedy Commons, a 41-acre retail and commercial complex including cinemas, food stores, restaurants, and businesses buildings with innovative facade signage elements.
  • 1997: St. Francis Xavier, a new worship space containing a chapel, meeting rooms, offices, meditation garden and parish hall for 200 people is completed.
  • 1998: Retail warehousing space for the Orion Gate Retail Development is designed on a 200-acre site adjacent to Highway 410 and Steeles Avenue in Brampton, and wins the Mississauga Urban Design Award.
  • 1998: Long-term urban design and master planning for the Uptown Waterloo Redevelopment of Waterloo Town Square commences. The plan with urban design guidelines initiates the reclaiming of King Street as the Town’s main street. It includes renovations to a mall, mixed-use buildings, and a design concept for the civic square. The project gets recognized as one of the top urban developments in the Americas by Urban Land Institute (2010), and also wins the Ontario Masonry Design award.
  • 1999: The Nanning International Convention and Exhibition Centre is named the joint winner of an international design competition in association with WZMH.
  • 1999: The Erin Mills Power Centre is designed with flexibility to accommodate individual tenant needs, and wins a Mississauga Urban design Award.

  • 2000: A partnership is fostered with Les Andrew and Tony Kemp to design and build the new academic wing for The Bishop Strachan School, Canada’s oldest all-girls school in Toronto’s Forest Hill neighbourhood. The firm wins the Ontario Masonry Design Award for the project.
  • 2000: The Erin Mills Power Centre is designed with flexibility to accommodate individual tenants’ space needs and wins the firm the Mississauga Urban Design Award.
  • 2001: The firm was retained to create Urban Design Guidelines and Development Standards for the City of Brampton that introduce the concept of Block Planning to the City’s approval process and to guide the preparation of Block Plans for future development.
  • 2002: The studio designs a bell tower to commemorate Catholic World Youth Day at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, and in 2004 provided additional Parish administration offices, multi-purpose room and rectory space.
  • 2003: An integrated community plan was developed together with extensive guidelines for the Community of Weston Highlands in Vaughan.
  • 2003: To guide the City of St. Thomas’ funding programs for Façade Improvement, Revitalization and Restoration, guidelines were developed for the historic residential areas and the heritage facades along Talbot Street, the City’s main shopping street
  • 2005: The studio wins an international competition to design a mixed-use business centre, The Businessmen’s Club, in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
  • 2005: In collaboration with Macaulay Shiomi Howson and a multi-disciplinary team, the firm assisted with the development and refinement of a land use concept for the expansion of the urban boundary for additional Employment Lands for the City of Vaughan.
  • 2006: The studio wins an international design competition to prepare a development for the Ghantoot Resort and Hotel in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

  • 2007: A consolidated set of design guidelines for the new Community of Queensville are developed.
  • 2007: In collaboration with Sorensen Gravely Lowes, ENVision and Dillon Consulting Ltd, the firm prepares the St. Catharines Downtown Creative Cluster Master Plan to create a framework for Downtown revitalization.
  • 2007: The studio is retained by the Township, to prepare a consolidated set of community design guidelines, that merges the best guideline directions of the villages of Queensville, Sharon and Green Lane as a part of the East Gwillimbury Urban Design Policy Development and Guidelines.
  • 2007: The firm was called by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al-Qasimi to develop as master plan for the Sharjah Science City for the study and exposition for alternative and renewable energy sources. The program included research and development, a Faculty of Environmental Studies, an Ecology Museum, with IMAX cinema and Biosphere, a Conference Centre with a hotel,restaurants, and shops.
  • 2008: The firm designs a 22 physicians and clinics medical facility as the Peterborough Clinic with a focus on green building design.
  • 2008: A master plan and urban design guidelines for a 72-acre ORC Downsview Campus is developed in partnership with Malone Given Parsons Ltd.
  • 2008: Additions to Royal St. George’s College, an independent boys school, including renovations to a historic chapel in partnership with Andrew Incorporated Architect are completed.
  • 2009: The design and plans for a Civic Master Plan to include a full service library, cultural centre and leisure centre for the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury are prepared.
  • 2011: The studio re-brands itself in recognition of the partnership of Joseph Bogdan, Elie Newman and Angelo Caranci and gets registered as Bogdan Newman Caranci Inc.
  • 2011: The Bradford East Gwillimbury Central Library and Cultural Centre, a LEED Gold Certified building opens to the public as part of the Civic Centre Master Plan.

  • 2011: The firm wins the Ontario Builders Award in the Industrial category for the 401 Screen Structure and Town of Halton Hills Monument.
  • 2011: A concept Master Plan developed to create a large urban expansion area that will accommodate a full range of urban land uses within a new community for one million people in Kuwait.
  • 2012: The design for the LIUNA Local 506 Training Centre in Richmond Hill is prepared, showcasing how industrial buildings can be important landmarks with unique architectural design and form.
  • 2012: Additions and renovations to the independent university-preparatory school for boys, St. Andrew’s College, in Aurora commence.
  • 2013: The firm is selected for restorations to the heritage designated Walper Hotel in Kitchener.
  • 2013: The firm is retained by the City of Brampton to prepare Large Commercial and Mixed-Use Centre Development Guidelines to address commercial development in the city.
  • 2014: Restorations for the heritage designated St. Augustine Seminary are completed.
  • 2014: Design of a senior school addition to The Bishop Strachan School gets under way including a gym, high-tech classrooms, Idea Wing, and a state-of-the-art Inspiration Wing containing performing and visual arts studios.
