Following up on the successful Campus Master Plan Phase 1, which allowed for the development of Rogers Hall, the Staunton Gallery, the Wirth Art Centre and the Yuill Gymnasium, the firm was involved with the Campus Master Plan Phase 2 for the private school in Aurora, Ontario in association with Les Andrew of Andrew Incorporated Architect. The Primary focus for Phase 2 was a Theatre, Music and an Assembly space for the entire school.
The proposed addition connects the existing Great Hall (Kitchen/Dining Hall) to the existing Ketchum Auditorium, Coulter Hall and Staunton Gallery building creating an outdoor quadrangular space contained by the McLaughlin Science Wing, the Bedard Athletic Complex and the Auditorium/Coulter Hall. This landscaped quadrangle will have a more ‘focused’ and important role as a ‘linking’ space and is a strong physical and visual connection between this courtyard and the McEwen Atrium space. Apart from additions such as the proposed ‘Unit-Set’ design that is a flexible and adaptable backdrop to the performance space, the Band Room which will be acoustically ‘tuned’ to suit teaching and recording needs and will contain a large music library, a new Drama Classroom which doubles up as an assembly space, Robotics Classrooms to provide creative learning and problem-solving activities, and the multi-functional and dynamic space McEwen Leadership Centre / Atrium, the project also included renovations to the existing Kitchen Facilities,
The building is designed to target achieving LEED silver status and, as such, incorporates numerous sustainable design initiatives. These include energy efficient mechanical and electrical systems, recycling of storm water for irrigation and selection of local materials such as stone, concrete and interior finishes and the incorporation of solar panels and reflective roof membranes.
